Geoff Jones Memorial Quickplay 2025

On Wednesday 27th August, White Knights Chess Club held its annual Geoff Jones Memorial Quickplay Tournament in honour of our late vice president Geoff Jones. The five round event once again proved to be one of the highlights of our summer calendar.

This year saw 14 players competing, with each having ten minutes on the clock. It was especially encouraging to see four of our younger members, Kai, Bobi, Jadon and Elliott, taking part in the competition for the first time.

Tournament highlights

The opening round set the tone with several decisive results, including wins for Alan Young, David Guy and Kai Palmer. In the second round Alan and David both kept their perfect scores, while others began to fall back.

By the halfway stage Alan had beaten Adam May and then David Guy in consecutive rounds to move clear at the top. Behind him, Adam, David and others remained in contention, while the newer members gained valuable experience against more established players.

The final two rounds produced more exciting games but nobody could stop Alan’s momentum. His win over John Arnold in the last round secured a perfect 5 out of 5 and first place.

Final standings

  • 1st place: Alan Young, 5/5

  • Joint 2nd: David Guy and Adam May, 3.5/5

  • Gareth Harper, Chris Daniel and John Arnold followed close behind on 3 points

A big thank you to Jason Garcia for organising the evening, and to everyone who participated both in this event and throughout our Summer Calendar. The club is now well prepared for another eventful league season ahead.
